THE DOG STARS — Jacob Elordi & Jasper
The World Ended. Naturally, I Trusted the Dog First.
Ridley Scott gives us civilization after collapse, Jacob Elordi gives us Hig, and Jasper gives us the one character whose motives I never once questioned.
It's fascinating because The Dog Stars is receiving decidedly mixed-to-negative criticism as a post-apocalyptic film. But through Hollywoof's lens, there's another movie sitting underneath it.
Hig lives in a world where almost everything human beings invented has failed: institutions, safety, community, predictability.
And what survives beside him?
A dog.
Jasper, played by canine actor Rak, becomes part companion, part witness and part proof that Hig still possesses enough tenderness to remain human. Current reviews have specifically noted how central Jasper is to Hig's isolated existence.
The movie may struggle to convince me that this apocalypse is new.
But the dog convinces me the loneliness is real.
The Companion Cut: When civilization disappears, companionship stops being sentimental. It becomes survival.
