ANATOMY OF A FALL — Messi as Snoop
The Actor Who Should Have Been in the Oscar Conversation Had a Tail.
There is a scene in Anatomy of a Fall in which Messi — playing Snoop — appears gravely ill.
And it is extraordinary.
Not “extraordinary for a dog.”
Extraordinary acting.
That's an important distinction for Hollywoof.
His trainer worked for months on the physical performance involved in that sequence, teaching Messi how to let his body fall inert while remaining responsive to complicated cues. Messi ultimately won Cannes' Palm Dog and became an awards-season celebrity in his own right.
Yet what makes Snoop so crucial isn't technical difficulty.
He is an animal inside a film obsessed with unreliable human testimony.
Everybody talks.
Everybody interprets.
Everybody constructs versions of the truth.
Snoop can't testify.
And somehow I trust him most.
The Companion Cut: In a movie filled with witnesses, the one incapable of lying cannot take the stand.
That's a Hollywoof line.
