GOOD BOY
Finally, a Horror Movie Where We Believe the One Person Nobody Listens To. The Dog.
Horror gets much scarier when the only character who understands what's happening can't explain it.
Good Boy makes Indy, a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever, our protagonist. Humans become legs, voices, smells and fragments of information because the camera largely stays inside his world.
And suddenly every strange thing dogs have ever done becomes terrifying.
That empty corner they stare at?
That bark at 3:14 a.m.?
That moment they refuse to enter a room you've walked into a thousand times?
Maybe they know.
Director Ben Leonberg built the movie around his own dog, Indy, and critics praised its unusually committed canine point of view.
But what I love most is that the film reverses an old horror convention.
Usually the dog is there to tell the audience danger has arrived.
Here, the dog is the audience.
The Companion Cut: The humans think the house is haunted. Indy knows it is.
